Wander Wisely: Mr Call’s Annual Palm Springs Guide 2023

Introduction

Whenever I travel, I always wish there was a simple list of things to do in the town from a trusted friend. Something that I could easily access on my cell phone with just a few suggestions for each category. I could never find such a list, so I decided to create my own. I hope this list helps you get around Palm Springs a little easier. If you have any suggestions or just want to get in touch, feel free to email me via the button below.

Brunch

FRENCH MISO If you're in the mood for a quiet, quaint morning out, French Miso is the perfect destination. Tucked away in a hidden courtyard, this restaurant serves up some of the best eggs benedict I've ever had. The chef used to work at the Beverly Hills Hotel, so you can expect nothing but the best food and service here. The atmosphere is perfect for those who want to relax and take their time dining. Reservations are recommended, especially if you're visiting with a group.

FARM. Farm is a French bistro with a sprawling garden setting that's just the right location for its culinary feats. Classic breakfast fare and great cocktails make it the perfect place for two, or even groups of ten. Reservations are recommended - especially if you're looking to sit outside. The chicken sandwich is a personal favorite, but I've also had great experiences with the classic French omelettes. Avoid the Croque Madame - it's off.

CHEEKY’S Cheeky's is a Palm Springs institution, and for good reason. This place is dedicated solely to the art of brunch, serving up favorites like bacon-laced Bloody Marys and huevos rancheros. And if you're looking for something truly indulgent, try the bacon sampler plate - it's definitely not for the faint of heart! But the best part about Cheeky's? No reservations necessary. So be prepared to wait - but it's well worth it!

Crafted Cocktails

TAILORSHOP Palm Springs newest place to go for cocktails. I love it here. It's modern, yet has a certain quality of an art deco mens bar. Rich, dark colors, wooden panelling, gleaming brass, and servers in black tie. If the rat pack was still around, this is where they would go to have a drink. Small intimate tables for two are available, and they can accommodate large parties upwards of 12 should the occasion call for it. RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED but not mandatory. The cocktails here are amazing and you'll love the unique environment that Tailorshop provides.

MELVYNS If you're looking for a classic martini bar with old school glamour, Melvyns is the place to go. This spot was a favorite of Frank Sinatra's, and Elizabeth Taylor even honeymooned here. The atmosphere is undeniably alluring, and there's no need to make a reservation - just head to the bar and take a seat.

SEYMORE’S The hidden speakeasy located within Mr Lyon’s. There is something about this bar with it’s craft cocktails, decadent interior design, and private access to outdoor bocce courts, fire pits and cabanas that makes it feel like you're on an extraordinary adventure. When you walk into the restaurant ask the front desk where ‘Mr Seymore’s” is and they will lead the way! No reservations accepted. At times it can get fairly busy…but it’s worth the wait.

Coffee

EARNEST COFFEE. Ernest coffee is a small town coffee shop that takes its coffee seriously. They serve Blue Bottle Coffee, which is some of the best coffee in the world. The baristas have a bit of an attitude, but it's all part of the charm. Just go with it.

LIGHTHOUSE There's no hiding the fact that Lighthouse is a marijuana dispensary. But if you're looking for some of the best coffee in town, you've come to the right place. Whether you're a first-time customer or a regular, you'll appreciate the high quality of our coffee - and the wittiness of our staff. Stop by today and see for yourself!

KOFFI Looking for a great cup of coffee? Look no further than Koffi. This popular spot in downtown Palm Springs is a local favorite, and for good reason. The coffee is delicious, and the atmosphere is unbeatable. If you're looking to relax and take in the sights and sounds of Palm Springs, The Downtown Outpost is the place for you. Don't forget to check out the garden in the back - it's a great place to socialize with friends.

Dinner Theater

If you're looking for a night out on the town, look no further than Palm Springs' lively dinner scene. It’s an absolute must-see if you're in town. Reservations are mandatory.

THE PURPLE ROOM The Purple Room is one of the most popular dinner theaters in the area, and for good reason. You can enjoy cocktails and music as early as 6pm, followed by a delicious meal and then top-notch entertainment. There's something for everyone here, from jazz greats to the hilariously funny Judy Show. Upscale dress code is strictly enforced, so it's the perfect place to dress up and enjoy a night out. I had the pleasure of seeing Lucy Arnez, Bob Mackie, and Ross Matthews at an event here last time and it was a truly memorable experience. The shows are all wonderful, but my personal favorite is the Judy Show. Be sure to check this place out!

Good Meals (No reservations required)

BLACKBOOK. There are plenty of places you could go to find a good burger, nachos or cocktail. But, there's only one place that can give you all those things and more in Palm Springs - Blackbook. This gay bar gastropub is the perfect spot for a night out with friends. You'll love their delicious food options, including the best nachos in town. And, who could resist their signature spicy hot fried chicken sandwiches? Not to mention, blackbook is packed with cute guys to look at. Whether you're looking for a place to relax and unwind or for a wild night out, blackbook is the place for you.

TYLERS If you're looking for a quick and tasty lunch in downtown Tyler, you'll want to check out tylers. This charming restaurant is located in an old gas station and is a local favorite for their potato salad. The line usually wraps around the block by lunchtime, so be sure to get there early!

ROOSTER & PIG  If you're looking for amazing southeast asian flavors served up with precision, this restaurant is the place to be! The food is top-notch and the staff are some of the best around. Patrons are treated like royalty, making it a great spot to visit if you want a night out in true style. And with plenty of plates available to share family-style, why not make your visit an enjoyable evening spent with friends? The atmosphere here is relaxed but also glamorous; expect to find Palm Springs' finest flocking here for an ultimate night out. Just bear in mind that reservations aren't accepted and tables can be hard to come by – but trust me when I say it's totally worth the wait! Plus, now that the cocktail bar next door has opened its doors, you can sit back and relax with a pre-dinner drink until your turn comes around.

Good Meals (Reservations required)

BAR CECIL Bar Cecil is the best restaurant in town. Hands down. But be warned: you'll need to book well in advance, as the restaurant is constantly packed with locals and media types. The menu here is simple but delicious bistro fare, with impeccable service and some of the best cocktails in town. And the setting is just amazing - it feels like you've been whisked away Cecil Beaton’s house in the British countryside. I love coming here for a romantic dinner or a catch-up with friends. The Bibb salad is unreasonably good, and the warm chocolate chip cookies are a must-have dessert. Plus, the witty atmosphere always makes for a fun evening.

WORKSHOP Workshop is the brainchild of James Beard Award-winning chef Ryan Roadhouse and his wife, interior designer Jamie Roadhouse. This modern restaurant is at the cutting edge of cuisine, combining farm-fresh ingredients with innovative cooking techniques to create a unique dining experience. Reservations are highly recommended, especially if you want to sample Ryan's acclaimed dishes like the smoked beef tartare or duck confit. But don't worry if you can't snag a reservation; Workshop's bar is always open and offers a delicious selection of small plates, cocktails, and wine.

533 VIET FUSION 533 Viet Fusion is the place to go for the best Vietnamese food in town. The restaurant has a buzzing (mostly gay) clientele and a heavy handed martini. This is off the beaten track and where the locals hang. The shaking beef is out of this world. As is the pho. Reservations are recommended but not mandatory.

CLANDESTINO Clandestino is Palm Springs newest entry into the world of neuvo mexica food, and it's already winning awards. With an interior that's bizarre (yet impeccable), this restaurant is a must-try. The steak fajita is especially delicious, and the El Sully draft beer goes down easy on a hot day. The views of the Palm Springs art museum are also worth checking out. Reservations are recommended.

BIRBA Be prepared for magic if you get the chance to visit Birba. The bar and kitchen is located in a contemporary building in the back, while rest of the restaurant is located under the olive trees nestled into a garden along one of Palm Springs more popular streets. The food is simple Italian. But there is nothing simple about the flavors they serve. The roasted cauliflower with capers, chili flake, lemon juice and aged parmesan is fucking delicious. Also , the whole roast chicken can't be beat. (All made in their pizza oven). Be sure to order them both. Affordable prices. But, reservations are a must. So be sure to book early.

Hotels

COLONY PALMS The Colony Palms Hotel is without a doubt my favorite hotel in Palm Springs. Nestled among the towering palms and lush gardens, the property offers a quiet oasis away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It was built in 1936 by architect William F. Cody as the showplace for silent movie star Tom Mix. The hotel has been restored and is now one of the most popular hotels in Palm Springs. The hotel has 32 bungalows and 96 rooms in the main building. The rooms are decorated with antiques and modern amenities. The hotel has a pool, a spa, and a restaurant. The bungalows are my favorite - they're spacious, private, and have their own little garden patios. The rooms in the main building are also great - they have high ceilings, large windows that let in lots of natural light, and comfortable beds. The only downside of The Colony Palms is the restaurant. It's serviceable for drinks and snacks, but I wouldn't recommend eating there. Thankfully, Palm Springs has no shortage of amazing restaurants to choose from.

LA SERENA Looking for a romantic getaway? Look no further than La Serena Villas Palm Springs. These Spanish colonial villas come in shades of white and aqua, and offer an amazing downtown location. You won't need a car if you decide to stay here – everything you need is right at your doorstep. And the best part? The staff are absolutely delightful, and the restaurant is one of the best in town.

THE SPARROWS LODGE The Sparrows Lodge is the perfect escape for those who appreciate rustic charm and modern luxury. The cottages and barn were designed by award-winning architect Mark D. Sykes, and boast all the amenities you would expect from a five-star resort, including a pool with a fireplace built into it. But what really sets The Sparrows Lodge apart is the attention to detail. For example, the hotel bans televisions in order to minimize digital noise, and nightly gifts are delivered to your door, including local toiletries and warm cookies. You'll also find a private library stocked with books on artists such as Helmut Newton. If you're looking for a romantic getaway or simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, The Sparrows Lodge is the perfect choice.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most stunningly beautiful places on earth, and is a favorite destination for nature lovers and hikers. However, the best food and entertainment can be found in the nearby towns of Joshua Tree and Pioneer town. Here are my recommendations for the best places to eat and things to do in the area:

PAPPI & HARRIETS Since it first opened its doors, Pappy and Harriet's has been one of the most legendary music venues in the country. With live music almost every night, and world-famous barbeque, it's no wonder that this spot is always packed. The restaurant is located in Pioneertown, CA - made famous by the movie "Ingrid Goes West". And, just like in the movie, there's often a wait to get in. So be sure to call ahead to check on the music schedule. Reservations are not accepted, but you can take advantage of their picnic area if you're planning on dining in.

RED DOG SALOON Looking for a unique place to spend a night out? Look no further than Red Dog Saloon. This bar is located on an abandoned movie set in the middle of nowhere and has a classic saloon vibe. In the evenings, there's a DJ playing music and the crowd is a mix of locals and tourists. Red Dog Saloon is super gay friendly, but welcomes everyone. The breakfast here is amazing and the tacos and drinks in the afternoon and evening are also top notch. Whether you're looking for a place to have a good time or just want to explore something new, Red Dog Saloon is definitely worth checking out.

LA COPINE When two women fell in love with the desert and moved out here, they built their dream restaurant/business. The restaurant offers a seasonal menu that focuses on fresh, local ingredients. The women take great pride in sourcing everything from their own garden and orchard. They also make all of their own bread, preserves, and syrups. Dining at this restaurant is an incredible experience - you'll feel like you've been transported to a beautiful desert oasis.
