Mr Call’s Design Recommendation

The Bedford is a good sofa. Solid kiln-dried hardwood frame, eight-way hand-tied seat. Specify oiled oak feet and Performance Recycled Chunky Basketweave in Taupe. The fabric is a 100,000 double-rub polyester with a nubby weave.

The Bedford has the English-arm signatures. Shaped back, turned hardwood legs, brass casters. The casters are the tell. This sofa was designed to be seen from behind.

The construction. Solid kiln-dried hardwood frame, mortise-and-tenon joinery, eight-way hand-tied springs in the seat. Hand-tied seats are rare at this tier. Most retailers moved to sinuous springs to save labor.

How It Lives

The Bedford is a formal silhouette. It does not behave formal. Put it in a 1920s Tudor with built-ins and it disappears into the room. Put it in a Palm Springs ranch with a Saarinen Tulip table and a Noguchi lamp and it grounds the modernity. Put it in a downtown loft and it makes the loft feel inhabited.

The compromise. Seat depth is 34" with cushions. That is deeper than a strict cocktail. A 23" linen lumbar finishes the geometry. The Bedford is not a sit-up-straight cocktail sofa. It is a formal silhouette with a deep seat.

“A formal silhouette with a livable seat. The English arm without the upright posture.”

The Bones

Solid kiln-dried hardwood frame, mortise-and-tenon joinery, eight-way hand-tied springs in the seat, sinuous in the back. The cushion is an inner spring core wrapped in either a down blend or poly-fiber. Specify the down blend. It holds shape for twenty years instead of ten.

Foot finishes are configurable: dark walnut, ebony, espresso, natural, or oiled oak. Specify the oiled oak. It is the lightest of the five. The lighter the foot, the lighter the silhouette.

GREENGUARD Gold, made in the US. Each Bedford is built to order. Lead time runs ten to fourteen weeks. The hand-tied seat is what separates this from anything at Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn. Craft is a 10. That isn’t a compliment I hand out. It’s a description.

The Fabric

The wear score of 10 assumes the upholstery is one of the MCD-rated fabrics. The rating is fabric-dependent. The wrong fabric wears differently. The score drops.

The Bedford program offers seventy-plus fabric and leather options. Here is how I grade the categories that matter:

Perennials Performance
Wear 10
Performance Recycled Chunky Basketweave
Wear 10
Sunbrella Performance
Wear 9
Performance Linen Weave
Wear 8
Cotton & Linen Blends
Wear 5

The fabric to specify: Performance Recycled Chunky Basketweave in Taupe. A nubby weave with a rustic hand in a modern colorway. The texture hides stains. The texture also breaks up the flatness of a formal room. Most traditional sofas read flat. This one does not.

Perennials grades equally well. It is the durability benchmark in upholstery. Avoid the pure cotton and linen blends. They look right on day one. They pill within eighteen months.

Mr Call

Mr Call began practicing interior design in 2002 and founded Mr Call Designs in 2010. His work has appeared in House Beautiful, Brooks Brothers campaigns, and the design press. The firm has received the HUE Award and House Beautiful’s “Next Wave” recognition.

Across two decades, he specified more than forty-one million dollars of furniture, lighting, fabric, rugs, and objects for private clients. That work taught him what performs in real homes and what only photographs well.

He built The Call Standard™, a ten-category system for grading retail furniture against a professional benchmark. He now applies it in public, for free. Most designers tell you what to buy. Mr Call shows you how to decide.
