Mr Call's Notes

I visited Joybird's San Francisco showroom to spend real time with the Preston. I cleared it off and sat down to work through the frame, the fill, and the fabric.

The Preston is Joybird's 86-inch mid-century sofa, built in San Diego and Tijuana and made to order in more than eighty fabrics. There's a real construction story here, and a few things worth knowing before you order.

The frame is kiln-dried wood composite and solid ash, running on sinuous suspension — both right for a $2,327 Standard Retail sofa. Foam runs 2.5 lb, above the 1.8–2.0 lb tier floor. Seat height lands at eighteen inches which I respect, exactly where a cocktail-depth sit should sit. For the price, that's a fair trade even before the dacron issue.

The cushions aren't wrapped in dacron. That layer is what lets fabric hold its shape over the foam long-term, and without it the base cushion on the showroom floor model already showed the seams pulling and adjusting unevenly. The foam itself is firm, with little sink — this is a cocktail sit, not a lounge you disappear into, and that's worth knowing going in.

Seventy-six on The Call Standard. Recommended With Reservations. Order it if you want a firm, upright sit and can live with a sofa that may loosen at the seams over time; if you want to sink in, look elsewhere.

What this sofa is

The Preston is Joybird's mid-century sofa, 86 inches wide, priced at $2,327 as configured. It sits in Standard Retail, made to order and built in San Diego and Tijuana.

The sit

Seat height is 18 inches with no cushion. Seat depth is 22 inches with the cushion on, putting it in cocktail-depth territory — upright, not a lounge sink. The foam is firm with little give, so expect to sit on it rather than into it.

The look of the sofa

Mid-century lines, panel construction that's fine for the category but not exceptional. The arms run a little thin. Seams show some waviness, which tracks back to the missing dacron wrap. The back cushion reads a size larger than the sofa needs. Legs are screw-on, which means they're swappable, though Joybird only offers the one finish option right now.

What works
  • Frame & Suspension Kiln-dried wood composite, solid ash, sinuous suspension — correct for a Standard Retail build.
  • Foam Density 2.5 lb foam, above the 1.8–2.0 lb floor for the price band.
  • Indoor Health GREENGUARD Gold certified. No flame retardants, no PFAS.
  • Build Location Made to order in San Diego and Tijuana. Lifetime warranty on the frame.
What to be aware of
  • No Dacron Wrap Fabric has nothing to grip the foam with long-term. Seams already pulling on the showroom floor model.
  • Firm Sit Little sink. Cocktail-depth, not a lounge you disappear into.
  • Stock Fabric "Faithful Mocha" is a virgin polyester-nylon blend, not one of Joybird's recycled or upcycled lines.
Who this sofa is for

Right for: Buyers who want an upright, structured sit rather than a lounge-and-sink feel. Buyers who value a domestic-adjacent build and a documented manufacturing story.

Less ideal for: Buyers who want to sink into a sofa. Buyers who want long-term seam integrity without moving to one of the recycled fabric lines.
