Mr Call's Notes

I stopped by the Joybird showroom in the SFO Marina to get a feel for the Holt. It was sitting right on the main floor, so I took off the decorative throws, took a seat, and started digging into the build.

This model is Joybird's answer to the oversized, deep-lounge trend. You can order it in dozens of fabrics and modular setups. Underneath the fabric, there is a remarkably heavy-duty foundation, but the factory took a few shortcuts on the finish work that you should understand before buying.

The real value here lives inside the seat frame. Joybird opted for a 2.5-pound density block foam for the base cushion, resting on a layered, kiln-dried skeleton. That foam density easily beats out the typical retail standard. It creates an incredibly firm, supportive sit that will easily hold up to a busy household without sagging over the years.

The tradeoff happens once you look above that sturdy base. That excellent seat foam doesn't have a fiber wrap, so the upholstery just rubs directly against the raw foam edge. The back pillows rely on loose, thin fiber fill that felt lumpy and tired right there in the store. To top it off, the seat covers skip the bottom boxing completely, leaving the lower corners pinched into awkward "rabbit ears."

What this sofa is

A low-profile, ultra-deep lounging sofa supported by sinuous springs and a kiln-dried frame. It is assembled in North America without chemical flame retardants, focusing heavily on a durable seat core rather than plush tailoring.

The sit

Highly rigid on the bottom, but surprisingly hollow on top. Because the heavy 2.5-pound seat foam pushes back so firmly, your body weight shifts to the back cushions. Unfortunately, those thin fiber pillows lack structure, meaning you sink right through them until you feel the hard back rail.

The look of the sofa

It strikes a handsome, modern silhouette from across the room. Step closer, though, and the shortcuts show. The unboxed cushion corners look a bit sloppy, and the constantly slumping back pillows disrupt those clean architectural lines.

What works
  • Dense Base Foam A 2.5 lb block foam core guarantees a long lifespan and serious resistance to sinking.
  • Solid Skeleton The layered, kiln-dried hardwood frame offers a quiet, sturdy chassis.
  • Material Safety Manufactured regionally in San Diego and Tijuana with a verified zero-flame-retardant build.
What to be aware of
  • Flimsy Back Support The loose fiber pillows earned a 5/10 for holding shape on the floor and will need daily fluffing.
  • Raw Foam Edges Skipping the dacron wrap creates extra friction between the fabric cover and the bare seat foam.
  • Pinched Corners The factory skipped bottom boxing on the seat cushions, leading to protruding, unfinished-looking corners.
  • Return Penalty Sending this sofa back will cost you a 50% restocking fee, making online impulse buys a bad idea.
Who this sofa is for

Right for: High-traffic family spaces where a firm, indestructible seat matters more than perfect showroom styling—as long as you grab it at 40% off.

Less ideal for: Traditional living rooms, buyers who hate fixing flattened pillows, or anyone wanting a soft, sink-in seat.

The Call Standard™ scorecard
Section Demerits Read
Frame-2-2 for a flush fabric base that rests right on the floor, making it a magnet for vacuum bumps and shoe scuffs.
Upholstery-3+1 for the tough 2.5 lb core. -2 for leaving the seat foam unwrapped. -2 for the thin, unsupportive fiber back pillows.
Comfort-2-2 because the geometry fights itself—a rigid seat matched with a collapsing backrest.
Style-2-2 for the pinched "rabbit ear" corners caused by missing bottom boxing.
Total76 / 100Approved with Reservations. A fantastic internal core undermined by hasty tailoring and a punishing return policy.
